MEMRAMCOOK, N.B. – It’s been a good week so far for the Summerside Western Capitals.
The Capitals won their third game in four days on Saturday night, pulling out a wild 7-6 shootout win over the Dieppe Commandos. The Commandos hosted the Maritime Junior Hockey League game in Memramcook.
The Capitals, who are 17-20-2-3 and have clinched a playoff berth, will close out a stretch of four games in five days at home on Sunday afternoon against the Roger Meek Division-leading Miramichi Timberwolves (21-9-0-3). The opening faceoff at Eastlink Arena is set for 2 p.m.
Blaize Bridges and Alex Bradley scored the only two goals of the shootout while the Commandos’ Colton Parsons and Ryan Langan were unable to beat Capitals goaltender Alex Kelly. Thomas Stavert had the Capitals’ other shot.
The Capitals led 2-1 after the first period, but four unanswered goals in the first 9:21 of the second period gave the Commandos a 5-2 lead. The Caps answered back with two late goals to make it 5-4 after 40 minutes.
The Caps scored the first two goals of the third period to retake the lead, 6-5, but Langan tied the game with 2:48 remaining in regulation time.
Joey Colatarci (2), Bridges (1-1), Maxim Pitre (1-1), Curtis McGregor and Blake Millman scored in regulation time for the Capitals. Stavert, Bradley, Cavan Fitzgerald, Malik Johnson and Mitch Henneberry drew assists.
Joel Blanchard (3-1), Parsons (1-3), Langan (1-2) and Thierry Comtois answered for the Commandos. Alex Clark, Cody Drover, Matt Bernier, Justin McDonald and Andrew Meredith assisted.
Each team recorded 31 shots on goal. Vincent Charest was in goal for Dieppe.
