UPEI Panthers goaltender Wayne Savage flashes the leather on a first period shot from Saint Mary's defenceman Jamie Doorbbosch Saturday in Charlottetown.
UPEI goaltender Wayne Savage was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) male athlete of the week on Wednesday.
The fourth-year arts student from St. Thomas, Ont., turned aside 72 of 74 shots fired his way to lead the Panthers to a pair of road wins over the two teams that sit right behind them in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) standings.
The former OHL netminder made 34 saves on Friday in a 3-0 shutout win against St. F.X. and added 38 saves in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Saint Mary’s. He also assisted on the game-winning goal Saturday by sending teammate Chris DeSousa on a breakaway.
Nicole Clarke, a basketball player from the University of Regina, was the female athlete of the week.
