CHARLOTTETOWN – The Mid-Isle Matrix made it 10 wins in a row in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League on Saturday afternoon.

The Matrix broke open a scoreless game with four second-period goals, and Alex Smith provided shutout goaltending, en route to a 5-0 road victory over the Charlottetown Abbies at Simmons Sport Centre.

Brady VanderVelden (1-1), James Murphy, Spencer Francis, Ben Keefe and Drew Grady scored for the second-place Matrix, who upped their record to 15-6-1. Jacob Stewart (2), Cody Miller (2) and Matt Craig added other assists.

Alex Dunne was between the pipes for Charlottetown (8-11-6).


Regals 8, Summerside 4

ALBERTON – The Western Regals scored four times in the second period to take control of Saturday night’s P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League contest against the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals.

The Regals went on to post an 8-4 victory on home ice at the Jacques Cartier Arena.

Brandon Williams (2-1), Jason Gallant (2), TJ Shea (1-2), Brendan Shea (1-1), Brett Aylward (1-1) and Jake Getson provided goals for the league-leading Regals, who are now 19-3-3. Brendan Smith, Calvin McRae, Drake Smallman, Jeff Gaudet, Nathan Handrahan and William Stewart earned assists.

Spencer Groom and Joel Arsenault each scored twice for the Capitals (6-13-3). Chasse Gallant (2), Jorgen Strom and Cameron Gillis picked up helpers.

The teams were tied 2-2 after 20 minutes, and the Regals led 6-4 following two periods.

Winning goaltender was Kristen Clements.

Brandon Williams was named Western’s Regal Cresting player of the game.

The Regals’ next home game is against the Mid-Isle Matrix on Feb. 8.
