Big second period keys Matrix road victory
CHARLOTTETOWN – The Western Regals posted a 7-2 road victory over the Charlottetown Abbies on Saturday afternoon.
The P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League contest was played at Simmons Sport Centre.
Nathan Handrahan (2-1), TJ Shea (1-2) and Brett Aylward (1-2) all had three points to lead the league-leading Regals, who improved to 16-3-3.
Jason Gallant (1-1), Jeff Gaudet and Thomas Fraser rounded out the scoring for the Alberton-based Regals. Other assists went to Brandon Williams (2), William Stewart, Calvin MacRae and Curklan Fraser.
Andrew Wong and Drew Gallant answered for the Abbies (8-9-6).
The Regals held period leads of 2-1 and 3-1.
Avery Arsenault picked up the goaltending decision.
The Regals will host the Pownal Red Devils (4-14-3) in O’Leary on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Kings 7 Matrix 1
The Mid-Isle Matrix struck for five unanswered second-period goals en route to a 7-1 victory over the Kings County Kings at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex on Friday night.
Cody Miller (2-1), Ben Landry (2), Brennon Jarvis (1-2), Brady VanderVelden (1-1) and Drew Grady scored for the Matrix in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League game. Jacob Stewart, Zach Kennific, Ben Keefe and Kurtis Green collected assists.
Tyler McGillivray was credited with the Kings’ lone goal.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period, but the Matrix took a comfortable 6-1 cushion into the second intermission.
Winning goaltender was Alex Smith.
Referee Ryan Power called three of five minor penalties against the Kings. Each team picked up one double minor for head contact.
The Matrix’s record is now 13-6-1 while the Kings are 6-10-5.
