The UNB Varsity Reds broke a tie with two special team goals in the final period to dump the UPEI Panthers 4-2 in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action Friday night in Fredericton, N.B.
Mike Thomas scored a shorthanded goal at 3:59 of the third to put UNB up 3-2 while Phillip Halley added a power-play goal at 18:50.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second.
Dana Fraser scored both UPEI goals, with the first one coming on the power play.
Reggie Traccitto picked up two assists, while Tyler Brown and Harrison McIver each had one.
Jordan Murray had two power-plays for the Varsity Reds.
Charles Lavigne made 31 saves for UNB and Mavric Parks made 27 for UNB.
The Varsity Reds improved to 13-3-1 while the Panthers dropped to 7-7-1.
The Panthers will stay in Fredericton tonight to take on the St. Thomas Tommies at 7 p.m.
