BEDFORD, N.S. – The Charlottetown Islanders evened their record in the East Coast Ice Jam hockey tournament here on Thursday.
The Islanders scored twice on special teams to edge the Rothesay Netherwood Riverhawks 2-1 to improve to 1-1. The Islanders opened play with a 5-0 loss to Newbridge2 on Wednesday night.
The East Coast Ice Jam features bantam AAA and major midget divisions. The Islanders are members of the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League.
Against Rothesay Netherwood, Cody MacPhee scored short-handed and Jonathan Arsenault connected for a power-play goal to stake the Islanders to a 2-0 first-period lead. The score remained 2-0 until the third period.
Islanders goaltender Darryl MacCallum turned aside 30 of 31 shots while Charlottetown directed 25 at the Riverhawks’ net.
Wednesday, Newbridge2 jumped out to period leads of 1-0 and 3-0.
Islanders goaltender Sam Walsh faced 27 shots.
The Islanders are back in action against the Cape Breton West Islanders on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
