The Charlottetown Islanders have traded an eighth-round pick in 2014 to the Halifax Mooseheads for forward Liam Alcalde.

The six-foot, 218-pound Montreal native has an assist and 44 penalty minutes in 23 games this season.

“He is a really hard-nosed player,” Sonier said.

The 18-year-old left-winger has been playing on the bottom two lines for Halifax this season and was considered to be a spark plug for the team.

He will play against his former teammates Friday night in Halifax.

He had two goals and 24 penalty minutes in 42 games last season as the Mooseheads marched to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Memorial Cup titles.

He was a sixth-round pick in the 2012 midget draft.

Alcalde played for Islanders assistant coach Luke Beck at the Ontario Hockey Academy where he had finished fourth in league scoring with 45 points (25 goals and 20 assists) in 32 games.

The eighth-round pick was originally owned by Acadie-Bathurst and was acquired from Val-d’Or in the Guillaume Rioux-Legault deal in the off-season.
