The Charlottetown Islanders have traded a fan favourite.

Matt Bursey, a 19-year-old winger from Saint John, N.B., has been dealt to the QMJHL's first-place team, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, for 17-year-old forward Matthew Cusson.

“It sucks saying goodbye,” Bursey told The Guardian.

But he is grateful for everything the organization has done for him, including sending him to the Armada.

“I’m going to a contender,” Bursey said. “Fortunately enough for me, it’s the No. 1 team in the league right now.”

He said it was “fitting” that his Rocket/Islanders career ended with Saturday’s game in Shawinigan where his Q career began. He had heard rumors there was a possibility he could be dealt, but tried to focus on his game.

“You see guys leaving . . . at the trade deadline. A couple of years ago it was me coming to P.E.I.,” he said, noting this time was tougher than leaving Shawinigan. “The bond wasn’t as close as it was with this team.”

Islanders general manager Grant Sonier announced the deal Sunday afternoon after it received league approval.

“It is hard to see a player like Matthew Bursey leave as we feel he was sometimes underrated for what he brought to our hockey team,” he said. “In saying that, we are very excited to add Matthew Cusson to our lineup.”

Cusson is a six-foot-one, 180-pound forward from Dorval, Quebec. He was taken by Blainville-Boisbriand in the fourth round (72nd overall) of the 2012 draft. In 10 games this season with the Lachine Maroons of the Quebec Junior A Hockey League (QJAHL) he has eight goals and three assists along with 16 minutes in penalties.

“He is a young player coming from a very deep organization,” Sonier said. “He was having a very strong season in the QJAHL before suffering an eye injury. Now that he has recovered fully from that, we feel that he will be a great addition to our lineup for the second half of this season and for many seasons to come.”
