Five UPEI Panthers on national team comprised of AUS hockey players

Canada will play for gold Saturday at the Winter Universiade in Italy.

The Atlantic University Sport (AUS) all-star team defeated Russia 2-1 Friday in the semifinal.

Moncton’s Eric Faille and UNB’s Tyler Carroll scored for the Canadian squad that includes UPEI Panthers Wayne Savage, Alex Wall, Matt Maione and Chris DeSousa. Panthers coach Forbes MacPherson is an assistant to Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall.

"Our players have just come together two weeks ago, but they have been Canadian their whole lives," MacPherson said on Twitter after the game. "What an effort today."

Carroll and UNB’s Marc-Antoine Desnoyers had assists. Saint Mary’s Anthony Peters made 19 saves for the win.

Canada led 1-0 after the first and second periods and the teams exchanged goals in the third.

Canada will play the winner of Friday’s late semifinal between the United States and Kazakhstan.
