Chris DeSousa scored Wednesday as Canada advanced to Friday’s semifinal with a 6-0 victory over Slovakia at the Winter Universiade in Italy.
The UPEI Panthers forward scored the third goal of the first period as Canada held period leads of 3-0 and 4-0.
“Total team effort tonight (versus) Slovakia,” assistant coach Forbes MacPherson said on Twitter. “Every player left it all on the ice to live for another day.”
UNB’s Tyler Carroll scored twice for the Canadian squad while singles went to Acadia’s Liam Heelis, UNB’s Chris Culligan and Saint Mary’s Lucas Bloodoff.
Moncton’s Eric Falle had three assists while Culligan, St. F.X.’s Michael Kirkpatrick and Saint Mary’s Cory Tanaka each had two. Panthers defenceman Alex Wall and UNB’s Nick MacNeil also recorded helpers.
Saint Mary’s Anthony Peters made 17 saves for the shutout as Canada outshot Slovakia 47-17. Panthers goalie Wayne Savage was the backup.
Canada plays Russian Friday at 11:30 a.m. Atlantic while Kazakhstan meets the United States in the other semifinal.
“Any time you get Canada and Russia, it’s going to be great for hockey fans,” said head coach Gardiner MacDougall, a Bedeque native. “You have two very good teams and it’s going to be exciting for the fans.
