Mayer suffered head injury during recent game against Saint Mary’s

Jordan Mayer

The UPEI Panthers men’s hockey team will be without its top scorer for tonight’s game.

Jordan Mayer was taken off the ice on a stretcher during Friday’s game in Halifax with Saint Mary’s. He sustained a head injury after being hit by Lucas Bloodoff, who received a boarding major penalty and a game misconduct. Following the hit, Mayer’s helmet popped off and he hit his head on the ice.

Panthers’ coach Forbes MacPherson said Tuesday that Mayer would not play tonight and a decision on weekend games would be made later this week.

“He’s arguably our most dangerous offensive player, plus he’s been playing very well as of late,” MacPherson said.

Mayer, a second-year Panther from Kingston, Ont., has four goals and five assists in seven games this season and leads the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference with a plus-nine rating.

“It’s a significant hole,” MacPherson admitted, “but that’s why it’s a team sport. It’s a good opportunity for somebody to step up.”

Moncton (4-4-0) is in town tonight for a 7 p.m. game at MacLauchlan Arena. The Panthers (4-3-1) are winless in three games.

“With us really nothing changes ever, whether you win, you lose, you’re on a winning streak or losing streak,” MacPherson said. “You really just have to stay on top of your game.”

The coach said he would be looking for his team to bring the speed component of its game tonight.

“Traditionally, Moncton has been a huge rival of UPEI,” MacPherson said. “I expect we will be ready to go.”

Moncton’s top scorers are Pier-Antoine Dion and Eric Faille, who each have nine points in eight games this season.
