The Charlottetown Islanders are off to their best start in franchise history.
The team is 4-0, including a pair of shootout wins, early in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season.
The team began as the Montreal Rocket in 1999. The team’s previous best start was 3-0 in 2002-03, while in 2009-10, the Rocket won three of its first five games and lost two in shootouts. In 2004-05 it went 3-1-1.
Islanders’ general manager Grant Sonier is pleased with this year’s start, but is cautious not to put too much weight into the early season record.
“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, it’s one game at a time,” he said on Monday. “The only weight I put into anything this early in the season is how our team has performed.”
In that regard, the general manager is pleased. The young kids have come as advertised, he said, which is a credit to the scouting and coaching staff. The returning players have also stepped up.
“Everybody has put some time and effort in (during) the off-season and they’re starting to see some of the results,” Sonier said.
Goalie Eric Brassard won his first game as an Islander on Sunday, backstopping the Islanders to a 3-2 shootout victory in Saint John, N.B.
“He was outstanding,” Sonier said.
The Islanders return to the ice Friday when they host the Saint John Sea Dogs at 7 p.m. and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar Sunday at 3 p.m.
“We’re a young team that has got out to a good start,” Sonier said. “We have to be ready for the challenges ahead of us.”
The following is a look at the Charlottetown Islanders/P.E.I. Rocket/Montreal Rocket results during the first five games of the season since entering the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 1999-2000.
