The Pownal Red Devils opened the Atlantic midget AAA hockey championship with a 5-0 victory over New Brunswick Thursday in Truro, N.S.

With P.E.I. league MVP Patrick Cummiskey in the dressing room after being ejected for checking from behind, it quickly turned into the Harrison Hayden show. He scored twice 1:07 apart, including one short-handed marker, in the second period. He added an assist on the first goal of the game and was named the team’s offensive player of the game.

Johnny MacKenzie opened the scoring midway through the first and it was all Red Devils from there.

Matt Derry stopped 16 shots for the shutout and was named the defensive player of the game for Pownal.

Curtis Martell and Luke Dibenedetto also scored for the P.E.I. champs. MacKenzie, Cole Hawes and Zac Mella chipped in assists.

They will play the host team Friday at 1 p.m.
