Matrix wins provincial bantam championship

Calen MacInnis scored 26 seconds into double overtime Saturday to give the Mid-Isle Matrix a P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League championship.

The 4-3 victory over the Summerside Capitals provided the Matrix with a 3-1 series win in the best-of-five final. Mid-Isle will represent the province at the Irving Oil Challenge Cup being hosted by the Kings County Kings from March 21 to 24 at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague.

Dylan Wheatley and MacInnis each had a goal and an assist Saturday to lead the Matrix. Hikaru Kinowaki and Riley Gallant also scored in the win while assists went to Carson McManaman and Kyle Pinksen.

Brodie MacArthur, Jeremy McKennna and Taylor Read replied with goals for Summerside. Sam Bernard and Carson MacKinnon each had two assists while Austin Wooodard and Logan Vandervelden had singles.

Ethan Malcolm earned the win for the Matrix while Colby Bridges took the loss.
