Ben Duffy broke another P.E.I. Rocket record Friday night in Sydney, N.S.

The 21-year-old Lower Sackville, N.S. native broke David Laliberte’s single-season point record of 98, set in 2006-07, with his first period assist on Matej Beran’s goal as the Rocket beat the last-place Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 6-0.

Duffy, who broke Laliberte’s franchise record for career goals in December, would add another assist, but has company atop the team’s – and the league’s – scoring lead.

Captain Josh Currie had three goals and two assists Friday to ties Duffy with 100 points on the season. The linemates are two points up on Halifax’s Jonathan Drouin for the league lead.

Currie now has 46 goals and is four back of Laliberté’s single-season record of 50.

Beran and Deverick Ottereyes each had a goal and an assist in the win while Ryan Graves rounded out the scoring. Yan Pavel Laplante and Alexis Pépin added assists.

Antoine Bibeau made 23 saves for the shutout while David Honzik stopped 28 of 33 shots before being replaced by Alex Bureau with 14 minutes to go after P.E.I. scored three goals in two minutes. Bureau allowed a goal on six shots.

The Rocket improved to 37-23-3-1 while Cape Breton fell to 13-43-3-5.

The Rocket led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after 40 minutes of play.

Duffy also had a two-minute penalty – only his second penalty of the year on Friday. He has four penalty minutes each of the past three seasons.

The Rocket returns to home ice Sunday when they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at 3 p.m.
