Panthers push X-Women to the limit at AUS hockey championship

Daniela Falconio scored a shorthanded empty-net goal with two seconds to go in the third period to give the top-ranked St. F.X. X-Women a 3-2 victory Saturday over the UPEI Panthers at the Atlantic University Sport hockey championship in Sackville, N.B.

The Panthers had to win by two goals to advance to Sunday’s final. All five games between the teams this season were decided by one goal.

Kiana Strand on the power play and Samantha Sweet gave the underdog Panthers a 2-0 first period lead. Jenna Pitts scored with 1:34 to go in the first and Alex Normore tied it at 14:40 of the second period.

Rookies Jocelyn Dougan and Maggie Grimmer had assists for the Panthers.

Kristy Dobson stopped 25 of 27 shots for the Panthers while Kristy Garrow made 13 saves for the X-Women.

Eight of the Panthers shots came in the first period.

St. F.X. will play Saint Mary’s in Sunday's final at 4 p.m.
