The oldest AAA hockey tournament in Atlantic Canada is in full swing.

The 2013 Mark’s Work Wearhouse Spud Minor Hockey Tournament has a large impact on the greater Charlottetown area and Prince Edward Island as a whole during the four-day event.

The 38th annual championship, a major fundraiser for the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association, has attracted 83 teams from novice to minor midget.

“It’s key in terms of being able to make sure that the game continues to be affordable,” said Bruce Donaldson, tournament co-chairman. “While it’s a AAA tournament, all participants of Charlottetown minor hockey benefit from this tournament big time. . . Without it, Charlottetown minor hockey would operate in a deficit.”

The tournament accounts for about 10 per cent of the association’s annual revenue. And the spinoffs for the local economy are important with upwards of 4,000 people in the central part of the province this weekend. The tournament’s 180 games are being played at nine rinks.

“Hotels are booked right through from Charlottetown all the way through to Summerside,” Donaldson said. “It means revenue for hotels, it means revenue for the restaurants and it means revenue for all the rinks.”

reparations started early in the summer after the association’s executive was finalized.

“It’s a small committee but they work exceptionally hard,” Donaldson said. “They have an amazing passion.”
