DeSousa records three points in Panthers victory

UPEI continues hot start to 2013 in AUS men's hockey

The UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 6-5 in a back-and-forth contest Saturday in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action in Charlottetown.

Chris DeSousa and Mike MacIsaac scored 30 seconds apart early in the third period to give the Panthers the only two-goal advantage of the game. Shawn O’Donnell scored with three minutes to go, but the Huskies could not cash the equalizer.

Wayne Savage made 23 saves for the win while Anthony Peters stopped 39 shots in the loss.

Desousa had a goal and two assists on the night while MacIsaac, Jordan Knox and Travis McIsaac each had a goal and an assist.

Matthew Maione and Cole MacMillan scored in the win while Reggie Traccitto had two helpers and singles went to Alex Wall, Tyler Brown, Dana Fraser and Harrison McIver.

Shawn O’Donnell had four goals and Lucas Bloodoff the other for the Huskies.

The win improves the Panthers to 14-9-2, including 8-0-1 in 2013. Their last regulation loss was Dec. 1 in Halifax against Dalhousie.

Saint Mary’s is 16-7-2 and tied for second place with Acadia. The Huskies are in fourth, four points back.

The Panthers go to Moncton Friday to play the Blue Eagles and Fredericton Saturday to play the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds.

Around the league:

Acadia beat St. Thomas 5-2, Dalhousie beat Moncton 8-7 in overtime and UNB downed St. F.X. 2-1.
