Summerside’s Olivia Doughart scored the winner 2:46 into the third period as the UPEI women’s hockey Panthers defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 3-2 Saturday in Crapaud.
It is the team's fourth straight victory and improves the Panthers to 11-6-1 while the Mounties fall to 4-9-4. The Panthers are in fourth place in the Atlantic University Sport standings, but three points separates second from fifth.
UPEI captain Jamielynn Donaldson opened the scoring 2:21 into the first period.
Lindsay James tied in on a power play midway through the second.
Anja Weisser broke the tie 1:41 into the third and Doughart scored a minute later.
Doughart’s goal proved important when Kara Anthony scored on the power play at 6:06, but the Mounties could not score the equalizer.
Maggie Grimmer, Samantha Sweet, Christina Kelly, Jessie-Anne Howard, Courtney Stewart and Jocelyn Dougan had assist for UPEI.
MacKenzie Lalonde, Kristen Cooze and Elizabeth Deveaux had helpers for the Mounties.
Kristy Dobson made 19 saves for the wine while Meghan Corley-Byrne made 30 saves in the loss.
The game was played in Crapaud after Dalhousie suspended its program for the season and teams were given an opportunity to balance their schedules.
The Panthers host St. Thomas Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
