SUMMERSIDE — The Summerside Western Capitals broke a 2-2 deadlock in the third period to defeat the Campbellton Tigers 4-2 at Credit Union Place in Summerside Tuesday afternoon.
The home team jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead. Mitch Maynard opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 3:45 on an assist from Spencer MacDonald to give the Western Capitals the early lead.
Colton Parsons added to that lead beating Tigers goaltender Miguel Sullivan at the 15:16 mark. Assists went to Danny Chiasson and Christopher Caissy.
Penalties dominated the second period of play with Tigers Brad Dickinson receiving a two-minute minor and a game misconduct for checking from behind at 6:22. Campbellton’s Mitch Blanchard was given a two-minute minor and a misconduct penalty for a blow to the head at the 11:03 mark and the Capitals’ Scott Trask was given a major and a game misconduct for a blow to the head at 19:09 of the period.
Alex Blais brought the Tigers to within one when he beat Capitals goaltender Dylan McQuaid at 2:52 of the second period.
With the Capitals Justin Rasmussen off for high sticking, Campbellton’s Francis Bernier scored a power-play goal to even the match at 2-2 after two periods of play.
The Western Capitals took over the play in the third period. With just under seven minutes to play, Jonathan Aubertin scored a power-play goal on assists from Christopher Caissy and Mitchell Maynard, to put the Caps ahead to stay. Danny Chiasson finished off the Tigers with an empty net goal at 19:53 of the third period, assisted by Dale Deon.
Summerside went 2 for 8 on the power play while Campbellton went 1 for 6.
McQuaid stopped 14 of 16 shots for the win while Sullivan stopped 36 of 39 shots in the loss.
