Stratford’s Sarah Steele and her Canadian teammates have advanced to Friday’s semifinal at the under-18 women’s world hockey championship in Finland.
The national team finished preliminary play with a 7-0 win over Germany Tuesday to finish first in Group A at 3-0. Canada outshot the Germans 67-5, including 30-2 in the first period.
Steele is a 17-year-old defenceman.
The Americans also earned a bye to the semifinal after finishing 3-0.
Sweden plays Hungary in one quarter-final while Finland plays Czech Republic in the other. Both quarter-finals are slated for Wednesday.
Canada defeated the Americans for gold at last year’s event. It was the second time in the past five years Canada has won the championship with the USA claiming top place the other three years.
