Belvedere golfer Cody MacKay, left, and Stanhope pro Jeremy Stevenson wait for the fairway to clear before starting their playoff in the Potato Blossom golf tournament Sunday at Mill River. They finished the 36-hole tournament tied for the lead with a score of 146. Stevenson broke the tie on the first playoff hole.

MILL RIVER – A birdie on the 18th hole by Stanhope pro Jeremy Stevenson set the stage for a dramatic finish to the two-day Potato Blossom golf tournament.

Stevenson moved into a tie for first place with Belvedere’s Cody MacKay, setting the stage for a playoff Sunday at the Mill River Provincial Golf Course.

A bogey was all Stevenson needed on the first playoff hole to take first place. He had rounds of 75 and 71 for a two-day total of 146.

Stevenson went into the final round three strokes behind MacKay. Playing together in the tournament’s final group, MacKay increased his lead to four strokes after nine holes, before Stevenson started his climb.

“I knew (MacKay) had one shot on me, so I figured a birdie would get me tied,” Stevenson said of his final putt on 18.

Stevenson, who commended MacKay on a good 10-foot putt and the final regulation drop of the tournament to preserve the tie, said he was pleased with his play in what was his first competitive tournament of the year.

“I played good and had it going early, then gave some back and hung in there for the end,” he said.

MacKay, who opened play Saturday with a 72, was pleased with his long game but struggled with his short game on Sunday.

“My putter went cold today. I had a lot of good looks, but couldn't get anything to drop,” he said.

Ninety-one golfers competed in the 36-hole event, which had Noye Enterprises as its title sponsor.

As an added long-ball incentive in the tournament, sponsors put up a $10,000 prize for any golfer to ace No. 11 on Saturday, and a car for acing the hole on Sunday. No one collected the prize.

There was one ace in the tournament, but Red Sands golfer Mark Phillips accomplished the rare feat six holes too late. The C division golfer, with playing partners Bruce Erickson and Jim Osbourne from the host club, used a No. 9 iron to ace the 142-yard hole.

Golfers contended with cool and windy conditions on Saturday, but were blessed with warm, sunny play on Sunday.
