The Prince Edward Island Golf Association has appointed Dallas Desjardins, general manager of the Summerside Golf Club, as the new provincial golf coach.

Desjardins, who won the 2011 Canadian golf professional of the year award, will oversee the association’s player development efforts, including its junior development programs, assist the province’s top competitive golfers in developing their skills for improved performances at regional and national events, and identify team members for P.E.I.’s golf entry at the 2013 Canada Games in August in Sherbrooke, Que.

“I am thrilled to take on this challenge. I am keenly interested in developing our young players and look forward to helping them to excel in whatever golf path they choose to pursue,’’ said Desjardins in a release. “Golf can open many doors and I hope to be a positive influence on the careers of our young players.’’

Ron MacNeill, PEIGA executive director, said adding a provincial coach was a major goal for the organization.

“The appointment of a coach will strengthen our ability to produce top level competitive golfers. Dallas will also be working with PEIGA member courses to offer programs for both new and recreational golfers which will support our mandate to grow the game. He will be a great resource for our members, “ said MacNeill.
