Holland College Hurricanes

The Holland College Hurricanes, last season’s Atlantic Football League champions, begin training camp this weekend at UPEI.

Sessions start today, at 4 p.m., and are open to the public. Two-a-day practices go Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

“We’ve had an excellent recruiting year and we are bringing in some very promising new players as well as welcoming back many of our talented veterans,” said Andrew Hickey, Hurricanes head coach. “As the new head coach, I’m looking forward to building on the excellent foundation that has been laid in the past four years to defend our title and become the only three-time winner of the Moosehead Cup.”

New coaches this season including former all-Canadian linebacker Ross Young, Queen’s University Hall-of-Famer John Thomson, former UPEI all-Canadian Doug Crossman, Zack Nixon, former Mount Allison Mounties defensive end, Marc Reid, a former Carleton Ravens slotback and Paul Walsh, a former CJFL player from British Columbia.

They join returning coaches Ben Parsons, Dennis Sweet and Sean Hickey.

The Hurricanes play an exhibition game against the NCAA Division 3 Maine Maritime Academy Mariners on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Castine, Maine, then open the AFL season against the UNB Saint John Seawolves on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Saint John, N.B.

Holland College opens at home versus the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers on Sunday, Sept. 21.
