CHARLOTTETOWN – The Summerside Raiders are returning home with a medal.
The P.E.I. representative in the under-16 boys division of the flag football national championships defeated Nova Scotia 31-12 in the bronze-medal game at UPEI on Sunday afternoon.
“We are more than happy for sure,” said interim Raiders coach John Turner. “The boys haven’t played in six weeks, and we knew it was going to be an uphill battle to be sharp in game situations.
“They got better each game throughout the tournament. We are more than pleased to get a medal for sure.”
In semifinal play Sunday morning, the Raiders lost a close 27-19 decision to Saskatchewan. The P.E.I. boys twice had the ball inside Saskatchewan’s five-yard line and could not score.
“Like any football game, it came down to two or three plays,” said Turner. “Twice we got inside the five and didn’t come away with any points. That was the football game there. If we score two (touchdowns) there we have a chance of winning that football game.
“The boys played their hearts out, and that’s all you can ask.”
Members of the Raiders are Hayden Gauthier, Owen Hall, Mac Buchanan, Parker Cameron, Jonathan Rose, Camren Gavin, Tayler Read and Evan Richard.
Turner and Trevor Bridges filled in for Raiders head coach Cody MacKay, who is currently away on a school exchange trip in Europe.
