The Holland College Hurricanes look to get back on track tonight in Atlantic Football League action.
The Hurricanes travel to Fredericton to play the defending league champions, the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers, at 7 p.m. at the BMO Centre on the Fredericton campus of UNB. Both teams are coming off losses last weekend.
“This weekend, we need to focus on the game at hand,” said head coach Mark MacDougall. “The Red Bombers play a disciplined game and execute well on offence and defence. We’ve had a good week of practice, and it’s always easy to get up for a game against the defending league champions.”
The Hurricanes (1-2) are in third place while the Red Bombers (0-3) are last in the basement.
“With only four teams in the league, final playoff positions are still up for grabs,” MacDougall said.
The Hurricanes have struggled on offence during the first half of the season and are anxious to put up some points this weekend. On paper, the team appears to have a well-balanced offence, but the running game has been a missing piece thus far.
On the other side of the ball, stopping the run has been the issue. Given the team’s focus this week in practice, Holland College fans can anticipate improvement in both aspects of the game.
The next Hurricanes home game is Sunday, Oct.13, at 1 p.m. against the Saint John Seawolves at the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place.
Alumni are invited to come to the game as part of the homecoming football game. Free admission and giveaways will be available to those with Holland College alumni cards. Students and children are always admitted free of charge.
There will be music by the Holland College Welshmen Community Band, and a halftime turkey toss sponsored by the Allen Street Sobeys store and the college’s alumni relations office.
“Alumni are an important part of the Holland College family,” said college president Dr. Brian McMillan. “By inviting them to attend a home game, we hope to build a tradition of homecoming for college alumni and look forward to this event becoming an annual custom for many of our alumni.”
The fourth-year team won the championship in 2011 and lost in the final last fall.
