The Holland College Hurricanes opened its 2012 Atlantic Football League season with a 16-7 win over the UNB Saint John Seawolves on Saturday in Saint John, N.B.

Thunderstorms in Saint John delayed the game for three hours.

Rookie running back Chucky Ortiz, on 15-yard and eight-yard runs, accounted for the ‘Canes touchdowns. Alex Quinn added a convert and a 13-yard field goal to round out Holland College’s scoring.

A third-quarter interception and return for a touchdown was all scoring Saint John could muster.

Ortiz, who had 220 yards on 25 carries, shared the AFL player of the game with the Seawolves Alex McGarvey.

UNB Fredericton Red Bombers defeated the Dalhousie University Tigers 13-2 in Saturday’s other AFL game.

Holland College hosts the UNB Fredericton on Saturday in the ‘Canes home opener. It’s a rematch of last year’s championship game, won by Holland College 28-0.

Game time is 1 p.m. at UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place.
