The Tour de P.E.I., which attracted scores of the top female cyclists in the world, has been cancelled for 2010, it was announced this week by the Canadian Cycling Association.
The tour was scheduled to make its fourth appearance in the province June 6-10.
The stop had utilized the Confederation Bridge, downtown areas of Summerside and Charlottetown, and rolling hills in Queens and Kings counties among the five separate stages held during the week.
The CCA blamed the cancellation on the retirement of the event organizer. Also cancelled were two other Canadian tour stops for UCI-sanctioned races for elite women for 2010: MontrÉal Women's World Cup (May 29), the Tour de Grand MontrÉal (May 31-June 3).
Following the event organizer's decision to not host these events in 2010, it was determined that it would not be economically and administratively feasible to keep the events on the calendar, the CCA said in a news release.
An alternative UCI women's road event and date is under consideration.
The Canadian Cycling Association says it's disappointed with the cancellation.
"The CCA stands behind the CCA/UCI brands and delivers premium international cycling events to the most passionate and loyal teams, athletes, and fans of the sport," says a news release.

The problem with the CBC and Guardian just reproducing a press release is the confusion here in PEI. Yes the local organizer of the Tour de PEI changed jobs, so one naturally thinks that's why it was canceled. But it's obvious that with the cancellation of two other races in Canada, the retirement was elsewhere.

What a let down!
An event that brings competition, excitement and interest in a healthful activity to the Island.
A pretty good example for all of us, right?
I hope Island cycling enthusiasts will re-consider the loss of this event and make a pitch to keep it going.
As for Scott M.'s nuisance assessment I'm willing to bet he would benefit from riding a bike now and then. Try it Scott and who knows, you may stop being a charge on Medicare. -

To sad movies: It seems I have struck a cord with you seeing as how your making personal attacks after my blanket statement. It would seem you might not have the luxury of owning a car and being able to drive it on the roads and having these summer events such as the 'Tour de PEI and these completely . unnecessary parades (gay parade) block high traffic roads. This event is only for female cyclists, I think women have enough special treatment. We just don't need it!

You may want to reconsider calling a bike race a 'nuisance' since it is a legal activity with many benefits some of which I listed.
You further add the view that women and gays are receiving special treatment while blocking high volume roads.
I suppose, since you no doubt believe in equality, you will cancel all Royal Canadian Legion and any other parades because the traffic must get through.
But if you think about it Scott, there's enough room on Island roads for everybody. I would even invite you to try it on a bicycle, since you don't seem to have one, and when you see the road from a cyclist's viewpoint you might be a little more tolerant of those who express themselves differently from you. -

Sorry to read of the decision to cancel the tours of the girls in 2010
My wife and I volunteered in our town of Chateauguay for the last three years and all 100 of us were willing to do it again, especially since cycling has caught on so much in Canada lately.
Our retired Senior group of ( ex- educators plus) are planning a sectional tour plus options on the Island beginning the 23rd of August ,2010. There will be approx 20 of our members doing that week. All are looking forward to it.
Hope the Tour de Isle can get repaired.
