MacKenzie, Newson to meet for Tankard playoff spot

Skip Eddie MacKenzie keeps a close eye on his sweepers Wednesday during opening day action in the provincial Tankard being played at the Montague Curling Club.

Eddie MacKenzie and Jamie Newson will play Friday with the first playoff berth on the line at the P.E.I. Men’s Tankard Provincial Championship.

The A qualifier in the triple-knockout event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Montague Curling Club.

The defending champ MacKenzie rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex defeated Blair Jay 3-2 on Thursday in a defensive game. The contest was scoreless through seven ends. MacKenzie scored a deuce in the eighth and Jay tied it in the ninth while MacKenzie won it with a single in the 10th.

Newson defeated Tyler Harris 9-6 in nine ends.

Newson had a 3-1 lead when Harris tied it in the third. Newson scored two in the fourth, three in the seventh and a single in the ninth. Harris had a single in the fifth and a deuce in the eighth.

The loser of the A qualifier will play in the B qualifier final Friday night at 7 p.m. against the winner of the 2 p.m. game between Robert Campbell and Rod MacDonald.

The playoff games go Saturday at 7 p.m., with the semifinal on Sunday at 2 p.m., and the final at 7 p.m.

The winning team will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier in Kamloops, B.C., from March 1 to 9.

    Should be quite the battle on the A side today, last year's champ vs the #1 seed. First real test for the Newsom rink and it looks like Mackenzie is playing well. Based on the online results, I think you'll have Ed, Rod, Newsome and Cambell in the final four with Ed beating Rod in the final again this year.
