Eddie MacKenzie beat Rod MacDonald Wednesday 9-8 in an extra end on the opening day of action at the P.E.I. Men’s Tankard Provincial Championship in Montague.
It was a rematch of last year’s final, which MacKenzie also won in an extra end.
MacKenzie opened the 10-team triple-knockout tournament with an 8-3 victory over Kyle Stevenson in eight ends.
In the night draw, MacDonald scored deuces in the first, fourth and eighth ends and added singles in the sixth and 10th to force an extra end. MacKenzie responded with a triple in the second, a deuce in the fifth and three more in the ninth.
Jamie Newson, Tyler Harris and Blair Jay join MacKenzie as the teams remaining in the A qualifier. All four teams are from the Charlottetown Curling Complex.
Harris needed to scored singles in the ninth and 10th in his second game of the day to force an extra end against Blair Weeks. Harris then scored a deuce in the extra end for an 8-6 victory to remain undefeated.
Harris led 4-2 through five ends before Weeks responded with a single in the sixth, two in the seventh and one more in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead.
Jay defeated Robert Campbell 5-3, scoring singles in the final three ends for a come-from-behind victory.
Newson doubled Donald Clarey 8-4 in the opening draw.
Action continues today at the Montague Curling Club with draws at 2 and 7 p.m.
The final is set for Sunday at 7 p.m.
