Island teams looking for first win today at Canadian junior curling event

Prince Edward Island teams lost their opening games Saturday at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian juniors curling championship in Liverpool, N.S.

Cornwall’s Veronica Smith lost 13-4 to Manitoba in eight ends in women’s B pool play. Manitoba scored four in the first and fourth ends while adding deuces in the fifth and seventh and a single in the third. Smith had deuces in the sixth and eighth ends.

The Smith rink lost their second of the day to Ontario 8-1 in eight ends. Smith trailed 2-1 through five before Ontario scored two in the sixth, a single in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Charlottetown’s Kyle Holland lost 12-7 to New Brunswick.

Holland scored three in the second to take a 3-1 lead before giving up five in the third, a deuce in the fourth and three in the sixth to fall behind 11-4. P.E.I. scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

The Island teams are playing this morning with Holland taking on the Northwest Territories and Smith playing Northern Ontario.

The Queens County Advance is running a Cover-It Live event on its site for the national championship.

Fourteen men’s and 14 women’s teams are competing for Canadian titles, with the winning teams earning the right to represent Canada at the world juniors, Feb. 26 to March 5 in Flims, Switzerland.
