SUMMERSIDE – It's a busy day in the Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club on Sunday.
The first of three draws on Sunday is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
In the women’s play, Amanda MacLean will face defending-champion Veronica Smith in a showdown between the two unbeaten teams, who both curl out of the Cornwall Curling Club.
In the men’s action, MacLean’s brother, Matthew MacLean, will face defending-champion Tyler Smith, who is no relation to Veronica, to determine the B qualifier out of the triple-knockout format for the Page championship round’s A-vs.-B game, which will be against Charlottetown’s Kyle Holland.
MacLean is from Cornwall while Smith is curling out of Montague this year.
Veronica Smith sits at 5-0 following a 7-4 win over Kaleigh MacKay from the Crapaud and Silver Fox clubs on Saturday night.
Amanda MacLean, meanwhile, stole a deuce and a triple in a 10-1 win in six ends over the Silver Fox’s Jenny McLean that improved her record to 4-0.
Emily Keen of Cornwall filled up the scoreboard with two five-enders in a 14-6 win over Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike in Saturday evening’s other women’s match. Keen improved to 3-2 while Moerike, MacKay and Meghan Ching have 1-3 round-robin records.
Ching takes on MacKay, and McLean faces Moerike on Sunday morning. The women’s round robin wraps up Sunday at 2 p.m., with Keen playing McLean, Moerike taking on MacKay and Ching playing MacLean.
On the men’s side, Smith beat Summerside’s Justin Campbell 7-3 on Saturday evening to advance to the B qualifier against MacLean.
Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe and Devin Schut were eliminated after each suffered their third loss. The Silver Fox’s Alex MacFadyen defeated DeWolfe 8-3, and Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton topped Schut 5-2.
The two men’s qualifiers for the Page C/D game will be decided in Sunday’s afternoon draw. MacFadyen will face Campbell in an all-Silver Fox clash in the D qualifier, and Noye takes on the loser of the MacLean-Smith game on Sunday morning to determine the C qualifier.
The men’s Page A-B and C-D games go Sunday evening, along with any women’s tiebreakers, if required. There is also a 9 a.m. Monday draw reserved in the event a second tiebreaker round is needed.
The men’s and women’s semifinals go Monday at 2 p.m., with the finals at 7.
The winning men’s and women’s teams advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior championships in Liverpool, N.S., from Jan. 18 to 26.
