SUMMERSIDE – The defending-champion Veronica Smith rink and the Amanda MacLean team remained undefeated in the Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships for participants under the age of 21 on Saturday morning.

Smith stole a triple and a deuce in the sixth and seventh ends to beat Lauren Moerike of the Charlottetown Curling Complex 9-1. Smith improved to 4-0 while Moerike fell to 1-2.

MacLean upped her record to 3-0 with an 8-1 victory over Kaleigh MacKay’s Crapaud/Silver Fox foursome. MacLean stole a triple in the third end and singles in the fourth and seven ends. MacKay is now 1-2.

The other women’s game featured Emily Keen winning 6-2 over Meghan Ching in an all-Cornwall match. Keen evened her record at 2-2 while Ching fell to 1-3.

On the triple-knockout men’s side, Kyle Holland and his Charlottetown rink came out winners in the low-scoring battle of unbeaten teams for the first qualifying spot in the four-team Page championship round. Holland defeated Matthew MacLean and his Cornwall team 5-2.

The game included three blank ends, and the teams were tied 2-2 after seven ends of play, when Holland, with Tony Nabuurs throwing fourth stones, picked up a deuce in eight, stole a single in nine to grab a 5-2 lead and ran MacLean out of rocks in the final end.

Holland is now 3-0 and MacLean is 2-1.

In other men’s play, Justin Campbell prevailed 5-2 over Alex MacFadyen in a battle between two Silver Fox rinks, and defending-champion Tyler Smith of the Montague Curling Club outlasted Leslie Noye of the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton 7-4.

Campbell and Smith are now 2-1 while MacFadyen and Noye are 1-2.

The winning rinks will represent P.E.I. at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships in Liverpool, N.S., from Jan. 18 to 26.
