It was an up-and-down type of day for P.E.I.’s Summerside Chevys here at the Baseball Canada national bantam championship in Vaughn, Ont.
After losing 13-3 to Nova Scotia in six innings in the morning, the Chevys spotted Newfoundland and Labrador a 3-0 lead before roaring back with back-to-back five-run rallies in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 10-3 win.
P.E.I.’s record is now 2-2 in the 15-under tournament, with one round-robin game remaining against Saskatchewan today at 3:30 p.m. AT.
Nova Scotia 13, Chevys 3
The Chevys committed six errors in the field and gave up runs in five of six innings, including seven in the sixth frame.
Hunter McQuaid, Logan MacDougall, Brandon Condon and Elijah Hood pitched for the Chevys.
Kallum Muirhead was P.E.I.’s top batter with a 3-for-3 summary, including a run scored and an RBI. MacDougall (2-2, run scored) also had a big game offensively.
Nova Scotia scored single runs in each of the first two innings, and counted a deuce in its third at-bat to open up a 4-0 lead.
The Chevys answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Nova Scotia made it 6-3 in its half of the frame.
Zack Zinck batted 3-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two in leading Nova Scotia (2-1).
Chevys 10, N.L. 3
Muirhead swung the hot bat for the Chevys, going 2-for-2, scoring two runs and driving in three.
Laporte, Hickey and Ethan Francis all went 2-for-4.
Laporte and Hockey each scored two runs and had an RBI as seven different players recorded hits.
Winning pitcher Dawson McCormack went the distance, giving up four hits, two walks and he fanned six. All three of Newfoundland and Labrador’s runs were unearned.
Newfoundland and Labrador took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, and added a single in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead.
