The Baseball Canada 18U Championship is in Magog, Que. Aug. 15-18, 2014.
MAGOG, Que. – British Columbia struck early and often in defeating Team P.E.I. at the at the Baseball Canada national 18-under championship on Thursday afternoon.
The final score was 9-1 as P.E.I. fell to 0-2.
Earlier Thursday, Manitoba overcame an early deficit to outscore P.E.I. 8-6.
The Island squad has two games scheduled for Friday. They take on Newfoundland and Labrador at 12:30 p.m., Atlantic time, and New Brunswick at 8 p.m.

British Columbia, which outhit P.E.I. 13-2, scored three runs in the top of the first inning, added two more in the second and sixth frames and added single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Sam Walsh of Elliotvale took the pitching loss while Dominique Ryan of Charlottetown and Brady Vandervelden of Shamrock had P.E.I.’s hits.
Colin Loerick of Summerside and Brodie MacBeth of Marshfield worked in relief for P.E.I.
Manitoba 8 P.E.I. 6
P.E.I. was unable to protect an early lead in its opening game.
The Island representative jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but Manitoba rallied with four runs in the fourth inning and a three-run fifth capped the comeback.
Matt Barlow of Summerside went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead P.E.I. offensively. Ryan, Jay Oram of Summerside, Stephen O’Shea of Stratford, Darcy Affleck of Stanhope and Logan Gallant of Cornwall all had single hits for P.E.I., which committed four errors in the field leading to four unearned runs for Manitoba.
Vandervelden started on the hill for P.E.I., and he gave up five runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings of work. Affleck relieved Vandervelden and was tagged with the loss. He allowed three runs – all unearned – in 1 2/3 innings. Kiersten Steele of Gaspereaux worked a scoreless sixth inning.
