The Morell Chevies held off a stubborn Northside Brewers team for a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon in Morell to improve to 9-2 on the Kings County Baseball League season.
The Chevies did all their damage in the first two innings off starting pitcher D.J. Dunn, striking for a single run in the first inning on a Desi Doyle RBI double. They added five more runs in the second inning, keyed by consecutive RBI base hits by Logan Gallant, Doyle and Troy Coffin.
Dunn was relieved by Tyson Blue, who held the Chevies in check for the final five innings.
The Brewers answered with single runs in the first three innings off Chevy starter Andrew O’Shea. O’Shea would pitch into the seventh and was relieved by Troy Coffin, who recorded the final three outs to record the save.
Nigel Fisher drilled a two-run double to close the gap to 6-5 in the seventh but that was as close as the Brewers would come.
Doyle finished 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Chevies, while Grant Doyle added a pair of hits. For the Brewers, Pete MacLeod scored two runs while reaching base on three walks, while Jed MacEwen finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Bombers 12 Jays 2
The Peakes Bombers defeated the Charlottetown Jays 12-2 in six innings Sunday in Peakes.
Peakes were led by Pat MacDonald 3-for-3, Matt MacDonald 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Tyson McInnis 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
Nick Creelman was 1-for-2 for Charlottetown.
Rob Phalen allowed only four hits for the win while Dan O'Shea was tagged with the loss.
Selects 7 Sluggers 4
The P.E.I. Youth Selects scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating the Peakes Tee Sluggers 7-4 Friday in Kings County Baseball League action.
The top two hitters in the Selects’ lineup, J.J. Oram and Jed Noonan, combined to go 5-for-5 with three walks and six runs. Matt Barlow drove in four runs and Kyle Pinksen knocked in two more off Sluggers’ starter Sam Walsh, who went the distance.
Darcy Affleck went four inning for the win for the Selects, with relief help from Patrick Gallant and Oram.
