The Saint John Alpines land for the first time this season at cozy Memorial Field when the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders welcome the last-place squad in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League on Sunday.
Game time is 1 p.m.
Saint John (3-9) has struggled because of injuries to its starting pitchers pitchers, but left-handed aces Shawn O’Toole and Ryan Arsenault are rested and healthy.
Josh Ferguson and Kevin DeSaulniers lead the offence with batting averages over .400 nearly a third of the way into the year.
Alpines Newcomer Dan Taylor has been a big addition, leading the team in home runs (3) and RBIs (10).
The Islanders (8-7) will continue to rely on strong pitching and good defence.
Jordan Stevenson (2-2) gets the pitching start and will have to work his way through a patient, good-hitting lineup as the Alpines average more than five walks per game.
Will Connolly’s play at second base has solidified the Islanders defence and a hot streak has his batting average at .346, second on the squad behind Morgan MacLean (.381).
MacLean also leads the Isles in RBIs (11) while Jordan Duffy, Alex Abbott and Taylor Larkin each have six runs batted in.
Start time for the Chatham Ironmen-Islanders game scheduled for Tuesday, Canada Day, has been moved to 4 p.m. from 6 p.m. to better co-ordinate with Canada Day activities in Victoria Park and near Memorial Field.
