New Glasgow native J.P. Stevenson has made the national junior baseball team for a spring training camp next week in Florida.

The left-handed pitcher was one of 27 players invited to the April 11 to 21 camp at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista.

The team will play an eight-game exhibition schedule against extended spring training clubs from the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros. A game is also scheduled against Lake Sumter Junior College, and on April 15, the team will travel to Dunedin to play the Toronto Blue Jays extended spring club at the Bobby Mattick Complex.

The camp is an important step in the process as the team prepares for the COPABE Americas under-18 World Cup qualifier in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, from Sept. 5 to 14. The top four finishers in Mexico qualify for the 2015 IBAF World Cup at the historic Koshien Stadium in Japan.

Following this month’s camp, the team will travel to the Dominican Republic in late May for games against Dominican Summer League clubs, before travelling to Cuba in July for an exhibition series against the Cuban under-18 national team.

Stevenson is one of five invitees who played in the 2013 IBAF under-18 World Cup in Taiwan. He also took part in the alumni week/spring camp held in St. Petersburg, Fla., in March.
