Diamond dreams: A look at P.E.I. baseball players at high school, college

The following is a look at Prince Edward Island baseball players who are away at high school or college programs.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

 

J.J. Oram

Position — Shortstop

Age —  16

Hometown — Summerside

School — Vauxhall Academy of Baseball

Current year — Grade 11.

Oram is attending Vauxhall after spending the 2012 summer training with the Canada Games team as its starting shortstop. Oram spent the 2011 and 2012 winters with Eastern Baseball Academy (EBA).

 

Cole MacLaren

Position — Catcher

Age — 16

Hometown — Cardigan

School — Okotoks Baseball Academy

Current year — Grade 11.

MacLaren got noticed by Okotoks head coach A.J. Fystro at an EBA’s high school showcase. After spending the winter of 2012 training with EBA MacLaren is now fully exceeding all expectations as he is already receiving offers from colleges in the States as he trains full time with Okotoks.

 

Jed Noonan

Position — Outfield

Age — 16

Hometown — Summerside

School — Okotoks Baseball Academy

Current year — Grade 11.

Noonan is one of three players who trained with EBA during the winter of 2012 now with the Okotoks Baseball Academy family where he is boosting his confidence as an offensive threat and maintaining his athletic abilities in the field.

 

Charles McLellan

Position — Pitcher

Age —  17

Hometown — Cardigan

School — Okotoks Baseball Academy

Current year — Grade 12.

McLellan struck the eye of many high school coaches during the EBA showcase in 2012 as he touched 84 mph.

 

Darcy Affleck

Position — Pitcher, third base

Age —  16

Hometown — Stratford

School — Prospects Baseball Academy

Current year — Grade 12.

Affleck spent his 2011 winter training with EBA, where he was recruited by Prospects Academy and has been there since the fall of 2012 as a starting third baseman and a middle relief pitcher.

 

Spencer Horne

Position — Pitcher

Age — 16

Hometown — Cornwall

School — Okotoks Baseball Academy

Current year — Grade 12.

After shutting down Manitoba at the 2012 Canada Cup Horne got introduced to Okotoks coach A.J. Fystro. He is now looking to attend college in the States. Horne spent last summer as a starter for the P.E.I. Canada Games and junior team.

 

COLLEGE PLAYERS

 

Brody MacDonald

Position — Left-handed pitcher

Age — 20

Hometown — Cornwall

School — Mount Olive College (NCAA II)

Current year —Junior.

MacDonald has proved himself to be one of the better pitchers to come out of P.E.I. not forgetting Morgan Carlyle and J.P. Stevenson.  He spent his freshman and sophomore year at Muscatine Community College, which led to a one year stint at Prairie Baseball Academy. From PBA MacDonald was recruited by Mount Olive College, a top-10 nationally ranked NCAA Division II school located in North Carolina.

 

Dylan McKenna

Position — Shortstop, second base

Age —  19

Hometown — Cornwall

School —Prairie Baseball Academy

Current year — Sophomore.

McKenna spent the 2012-13 season with Prairie before committing to a busy 2013 summer playing with the Charlottetown Islanders and provincial junior team where he was the starting shortstop. He is now back with Prairie as a team leader and shouldn’t have a problem being a starter on the varsity team which will provide him great exposure to U.S. colleges and universities where he hopes to play in the fall of 2014.

 

Brady Arsenault

Position — Pitcher, third base

Age — 18

Hometown — Summerside

School — Prairie Baseball Academy

Current year — Freshman.

Arsenault was first noticed by Prairie during his second year as a pitcher/third baseman for the P.E.I. Canada Cup team during the summer of 2012. From there he spent time at EBA, which helped him in a “captain” role on the 2013 Canada Games team which led to the start of his college career.

 

Nick MacPhail

Position — First base

Age — 18

Hometown —Cornwall

School — Prairie Baseball Academy

Current year — Freshman.

MacPhail also got noticed during the 2012 Canada Cup tournament by Prairie coach Ryan MacDonald. Nick played as first base at the Canada Cup team before spending his 2013 summer with the P.E.I. junior team. MacPhail will spend his next two seasons at Prairie.

 

Denver Morrison

Position — Catcher, second base

Age —  18

Hometown — Cardigan

School —Prairie Baseball Academy

Current year — Freshman.

Morrison known for his strong offense and defensive catching abilities spent the last two winters training at EBA before moving off to Lethbridge, Alta., in September to play at the college level with Prairie. Morrison also spent time as a catcher and second baseman the last two summers with the Canada Games and Canada Cup teams.
