Shawn MacDougall hit a key two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie and propel the Stratford 3 Points Machining and Aerospace Athletics to a 13-7 win over the Peakes Bombers in Kings County Baseball League playoff action Sunday in Stratford.
Stratford would add four more runs in the frame and took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinal. Game 4 is Tuesday in Morell at 7 p.m.
John Walsh threw two scoreless innings in relief of starter Kyle MacDougall for the win. Josh Coffin suffered the loss in relief of Rob Phelan.
Brad Larter had four hits to lead the Athletics at the plate while Allister Smith, Andrew MacNevin and Randy Taylor each chipped in two hits.
Coffin and Joe Gardiner, who each had three hits, led the Bombers from the dish.
Chevies 10, Brewers 5
Morell — Quen Johnston hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to lift the Morell Coverall Construction Chevies to a 10-5 win over the Northside Brewers and a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five semifinal series.
The Brewers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two innings, led by Jason MacLean’s two-run home run in the second inning.
The Chevies answered in the top of the third as Scott Ellsworth led off the inning with a solo home run and Desi Doyle added a two-out single. Dustin Larkin restored the Brewer lead in the bottom of the inning with a home run and they extended their lead to two runs in the fourth as Larkin singled home Peter MacLeod.
The Chevies would respond in the fifth inning, as Grant Doyle hit a three-run home run to right centre field, giving the Chevies a 6-5 lead.
Troy Coffin pitched a complete game to pick up the win, striking out 13. Larkin took the loss, striking out seven.
Desi Doyle finished the night 3-for-3 to lead the Chevies at the plate, while Derrick Plaggenhoef and Johnston added a pair of hits.
MacLeod picked up three hits for the Brewers, with Larkin adding a pair.
Game 3 goes Tuesday in Morell at 6:30 p.m.
