The P.E.I. Rocket traded forwards Joel Champagne and Chris Doyle to the Victoriaville Tigres, Serge Savard Jr., Rocket president and governor, confirmed Tuesday.
In exchange the Rocket receives forwards Jonathan Bonneau, Michael Ortika, a first-round pick in 2010 draft, a third-round pick in 2010 draft, a fourth-round pick in 2010 draft and a second-round draft pick in 2011.
Bonneau, 19, of Sherbrooke, Que., was drafted by Victoriaville in the first round (fourth overall) at the 2007 QMJHL entry draft. In his first year, he had 12 goals and 24 points. Last season he scored 12 goals and had 31 points.
This season in 35 games he has eight goals and 19 points and will play in tonight's game versus Saint John (7 p.m., Harbour Station). Pending other trades, Ortika may not report this season.
Ortika is a 5-foot-8, 168-pounder 16-year-old centre from Laval, Que., who was drafted by the Tigres in the third round of the 2009 QMJHL entry draft. He is playing Midget AAA in Quebec.

Well, Serge! You did it again! You had a contender and you could have built on some trades, but you decided to look to the future, again and again and again. You are in business, and you are there to benefit yourself and no one else.
As a tax payer of this city, I hate to see money going to support this team which keeps going nowhere. It is time Savard sold this team and moved elsewhere. I'm sure Summerside would be a good fit under a new coach and new owners. I will not be attending another Rocket game in Charlottetown and I hope many more fans stay home. When the attendance figures dip, Sergie boy, may get the hint. For those of you who wish to continue supporting this organization, you deserve what you get. -

This is not a bad move.
The reality is - you nay sayers is that after 30 some games we are what; 9th in the league.....
who in their right mind thinks that we are going on to the Memorial Cup?
So instead pick up a fistful of picks, two active players for a one trick pony with legal issues and Joel Champange. I liked Joel but sometimes to get ahead you give up good players.
To Serge, Kent and others... I think it was a great move(s).
I am a season ticket holder - and I will be back.
And yes, tomorrow night I will be happy to take my seat and root like the Dickens.... -

Thanks Serge! I was on the fence on how many playoff tickets for this year and for season tickets for next year but you just made the decision for me. I'm not going to bother with the playoff tickets and not going to bother with season tickets next year. It's always next year, next year, next year, well no next year for me.

The trades today for the Rocket make no sense at all. We trade away our two top scorers and a third line player with point totals of 83 points. We get back a bunch of no names and some draft picks for next year with a point total of 35 points in the Q this year. Even someone in first grade could see that this doesn`t remotely come close to being a good deal. Serge you sold us out and if you thought the Civic Centre was empty before Christmas; just wait until after the New Year. Don`t stand in front of the doors, because the stampede might run you down. Both Moncton and St. John upgraded their teams for a long play-off run. PEI unloads all their talent to ensure they barely make the play-offs again this year and go out in the first round,AGAIN! This team had potential until today and now they don`t have a chance. They should have fired you along with Guy because you are clueless in this organization. Enough said!

Same old story...The Rocket are just a farm team for the rest of the league...Be a so-so team trade away anybody good for down the road players...At the same time cry hard times and expect support from the Fans and the Tax Payers of the City...I think its time that the Rocket traded Savard and get somebody that actually knows how to run a hockey club.

This tells me that Serge is getting ready to move this team as the city has subsided him to get players he wanted & as long as they are in Ch'town he couldn't give a dam whether the team wins or loses. Take this team where you like Serge so we can get a team in here that cares for their fan base. Do us a favor & go quick.

Well Savard Jr. is a pitiful excuse for a man anyhow so the trade is not a surprise.

This is actually the best move that the Rocket have made since arriving on PEI. I hate to see a team lose more than anybody but what I hate more is when a team doesn't have a plan.
I watched The Wild Cats lose in the Memorial Cup final, to finishing last in the league and now back to top team status again, all within a four year period. They had a plan. Mean while, I have watched the Rocket claim they are going to compete, barely make the playoffs and then have to listen to people complain about the poor job they are doing.
Two active players and four picks for two twenty year olds is a big move for PEI Rocket fans.
Can people honestly think that the Rocket who are 9th in the league overall and fourth in their Atlantic division could compete for a title?
Great move, for now and use those picks wisely down the road for next year. -

Mr. Savard Jr, if you want to make money with this team and I know that you do, you may want to put a winning team on the ice. You just traded 2 of your top scorers for the shot at being a better team in a year or two. We want a winning team please.

Horrible trade, wonder what he'll ask for Cousineau? A bag of pucks because I wouldn't put it past him.

This is the beginning of the end for the Rocket in PEI.
You can not continually be rebuilding and expect to have a fan base.
This team is gone and management will blame the lack of fans as a reason. -

Lets be honest, Its obvious with the movement Moncton and SJ have made, that the Rocket would NOT of gotten out of the first round. Face it, they would have had to buy buy buy and I dont think it would have been near enough. Those teams are stacked.
With that said its still disappointing. Sure we got alot of picks, but the Rockets have NO scouting. Typically rebuilding is a few+ years, the rocket have been rebuilding since their 2nd year on PEI. The scouting is terrible.
MacLean and Street were not developing, Doyle is a one trick/one way pony, although he was a fan fav.
Marco was bought and sold for this purpose, to sell at trade time. got a few extra higher round picks but they'll doubtfully ever play in the Q.
I jus hope that come draft day that we'll get a few players back from SJ, maybe Vic and they get a pick or two back. Hopefully they have a few deals on the side that wont be announced til draft day. Its not uncommon.
Champ shoulda stayed, he had a year left. tsk tsk. -

I had an opportunity to chat with
Sea Dogs GM during their last visit. I said to him why would you unload
Grant and DiDomenico?, and that after pounding us in 4 straight in the 07 playoffs your team looked ready - His response was simple, that they were not good enough to beat Drummondville so they had to retool for 09/10. I do no disagree disagree with the trades - MacLean was awful and did not develop, Streit was a healthy scratch and Doyle has legal issues and in my oponion is a one tool player. Our only loss here is Champagne, who, will not be back as a 20 year old(Marlies) and of course Cousineau later this evening.
My biggest concern as a fan is scouting. Our scouts stink and if we are getting a bunch of draft picks for Cousineau, Doyle and Champagne here's hoping Serge dumps our scouting staff before he's done for future considerations. -

Hey hockey_follower, Doyle and Champagne are 19 year olds. What did Savard/Hudson give up for Cousinean who was going to be our salvation. Did not happen and now they want to get rid of him as a 20 year old. And by the way, I believe Kent Hudson, as general manager of the Rocket franchise surely should be feeling some guilt as we blame Savard for these moves that are taking place. As general manager Kent Hudson would be responsible for movement on the team. Let's string him up also...
