Mike Buchanan

Mike Buchanan defended his men's A division title at the recent P.E.I. Open squash tournament.

The longtime No. 1-ranked Buchanan defeated 17-year-old Connor Jinks 3-1 (9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6) in a rematch of the 2015 final.

Jinks first men's A final was the 2015 P.E.I. Open. Since then he has played in five other finals, winning his two most recent finals (P.E.I. junior fundraiser and Moncton Open in February).

Since losing the championship match of the 2013 Atlantic championships, Buchanan has won 12 straight Maritime tournaments. It started with the 2013 Aspin Cup.

The run has included two Atlantic championships and 39 consecutive matches with a game play record of 117-5.

Seventy-one athletes participated in eight divisions with seven Squash P.E.I. athletes crowned division champions.

Benoit Sampson of North Rustico was successful in his first men's B final over Pat O'Connell.

The men's C final included two unknown participants in the final. Aaron Sweet of O'Leary made his tournament debut in January's Mill River Open by winning the consolation title. Tara Tischio of New Jersey is a student at Atlantic Veterinary College and a former U.S. college player. They gave the crowd a competitive final with Sweet coming out on top.

Marcel Petipas of Dartmouth, N.S., was the lone out-of-province champion, taking the men's D title with a 4-0 record in his round-robin event.

The two women's divisions included Seana Evans-Renaud of St. Peters Bay winning the women's open division and Cynthia King of Stratford taking the women's masters.

Junior champions were Liam Jinks of Stratford (junior gold) and Matthew MacDonald of Summerside (junior bronze).

Many P.E.I. athletes will be travelling to Moncton in April to compete in the Atlantic Championships. Athletes looking to sign up can do so by visiting
