Ruth Holland hit a three-point shot with half a second left as the Humber Hawks beat the Holland College Hurricanes 50-49 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball gold medal game.
Humber led 9-5 after the first quarter, but trailed 22-20 at the break and 38-33 heading to the fourth quarter.
Holland College had a chance to put the game away, but turnovers and missed free throws late cost them.
Candace Smith had 14 points to pace the Hurricanes while Jenea Barrett had 13 and Chelsea Slawter-Wright had seven.
The men’s Hurricanes team defeated Montmorency 98-68 to capture bronze in Fort McMurrary, Alta.
Holland College held quarter leads 17-15, 46-32 and 73-45.
The Hurricanes lost the semifinal by one point on Friday night and had to bounce back and play Saturday morning to get into the bronze medal game.
They defeated the Keyano 99-93.
“The disappointment of yesterday hasn’t worn off, but we came out and played two pretty games,” head coach Josh Whitty. “Pretty pleased to be leaving here with something, but really disappointed not to be playing in (the gold-medal) game, that’s on right now.”
