The Charlottetown Islanders entertain Halifax Mooseheads today at 4 p.m. at Eastlink Centre in the final game of the regular season for both clubs.

Entering Friday, Charlottetown needed a weekend sweep plus a Rimouski split in their weekend series with Quebec to have a chance at eighth place overall and the extra home game in the opening round of the playoffs.

Chicoutimi (73 points) has the same number of points as Charlottetown and also has an outside chance at eighth, if they sweep last place Baie-Comeau and either Charlottetown or Rimouski suffer a loss.

Cape Breton had 78 points and two losses would really confuse the playoff picture.

In a nutshell, the Islanders are hot heading into the playoffs and seem destined for a long playoff run. We shall see.

Island Junior

Forty years ago, the Island Junior Hockey League filled the Island rinks with strong teams like the Charlottetown Abbies, the Summerside Western Caps, North River, Montague, Tignish and the Sherwood Parkdale Metros.

Sherwood had standouts like the Currie boys, Steve Gallant, Ron Carragher and the electrifying Robert (Greasy) Gallant among others.

Today’s A & S Scrap Metal Metros were tied 2-2 in their Island junior semifinal with the Evangeline Red Wings before Friday’s Game 5 in Evangeline. Game 6 goes Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Cody Banks Arena.

The Metros coaching staff of Alex Smith, Corey Veld and Patrick Brazil will count on defenceman and captain Harrison Wood to log big minutes on defence. The offence is in good hands with snipers like Connor Smith, Lucas Holmes, Pat Cummiskey, Tanner Lund, and Curtis McGregor.

The P.E.I. champ advances to the Don Johnson Cup in Newfoundland and Labrador next month.

Rec Hockey

The curtain came down on the Nooners Hockey League playoffs this past week as the Whites dumped the Reds 7-2 in the final game.

Former NHL great Al McAdam had a goal and three assists while playing coach Mike (Willis) Hennessey, Len Kelly, Blair McQuaid, Colin Hawes, Sandy MacDonald and Andrew Bartlett also scored for the winners.

Goaltender Jamie Cudmore was sharp between the pipes while Cory Gray took the loss.

Keith Ford and Jeff Boyle tallied for the Reds while Danny McGuigan and Jeff Hannam picked up assists.

The Island Storm is finally putting the pieces of a good club together.

The Storm poured in 137 points in their most recent road win and suffered a 110-107 home loss Thursday. You can get a closer look at the roster Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eastlink Centre when the Moncton Miracles are in town.

The bowling playoffs are underway at Murphy’s Centre and veteran captain Jim Kennedy has his team of Ebby MacInnis and the Smith brothers toying with the opposition in the Horsemens league. Kennedy’s team has been so sharp there’s hardly a peep out of Ron Matheson’s team of Ken Squarebriggs, Bucky Carragher and Danny Macdonald.

Harness racing

Red Shores is dark these days but simulating is available from up-country tracks. Blair Hansen’s good pacer Proven Desire (by Proven Lover) stepped to a new lifetime mark of 1:52:2 March 12 at Woodbine for driver James MacDonald. The four-year-old is in to go tonight in the tough $24,000 class.

Mark MacDonald had a great week at Yonkers with nine winners, including a four-bagger March 11 and a top-class win (purse $34,000) March 12 with Bad Boy Matt (1:53).

Wally Hennessey has been red-hot at Pompano Park and is off to one of his fastest starts ever with 70 wins.

Maritime-bred The Rev is in the $27,000 class at Woodbine tonight, but the field is tough with the likes of Erle Dale N (James MacDonald), Ellis Park (Randy Waples) and Mach Pride (Anthony MacDonald).
