Kensington withstands second-half push by Westisle to claim banner

The Kensington Torchettes retained their AA girls basketball crown with a 55-46 win over the Westisle Wolverines, but it wasn't easy.

Kensington had a 34-20 lead at halftime, but Westisle cranked out a 12-0 run to start the third quarter in the Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association Domino's senior AA gold medal game Monday in Charlottetown and drove Kensington to the edge.

The Wolverines closed the gap to 35-34, but could never find the score to take the lead and Kensington broke the run with a free throw, pushed back with a 9-2 run to end the third and put the game out of reach.

And senior forward Cassidy Champion, who scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, couldn't have been more satisfied.

"It's a great way to end a Grade 12 year. We just settled down after the run, we always come out slow after the half, and responded, played our game," said Cassidy, also named tourney MVP. "This (championship) was more emotional because it's the last time I'll play with these girls."

Abby Donald had 13 points for Kensington while Annie Tuplin chipped in 12 points.

Senior post Vanessa Rennie led Westisle with 10 points and nine boards. Madison MacKinnon also had 10 points while Gemma Shea had nine points.

The Charlottetown Rural Raiders Two went on a 14-point run in the second en route to a 52-28 victory over the Souris Spartans to capture the bronze medal.

The run allowed the Raiders to take a 25-12 lead at halftime and roll to victory.

Christina Lourenso had 14 points to pace the Raiders while Ally Mackenzie had 12 and Emma Bradley 11.

Meghan Stewart led the Spartans with eight points while Bailee Ford chipped in seven.
