Island athletes bring home 16 medals from Special Olympics National Winter Games

CORNER BROOK, N.L. – Team P.E.I. completed competition at the 2016 Special Olympics National Winter Games with a bang.

The Island squad won six medals in individual sports and the P.E.I. Warriors’ floor hockey team capped off an undefeated performance by winning gold in the C Division.

Overall, Team P.E.I. is bringing home 10 gold medals, three silver and three bronze.

“Everyone attained at least one personal best or team best this week,” beamed Team P.E.I. chef-de-mission Matthew McNally in a phone interview with the Journal Pioneer on Saturday afternoon. “We are very proud of everyone on Team P.E.I. coming here to Corner Brook, giving their full effort and having such a great attitude to the competition.

“The support of their teammates and competitors has been very inspiring. They’ve made so many new friends and had so many smiles this week.”

Floor hockey

The Warriors completed play 4-0, and defeated the host Newfoundland and Labrador team 7-2 in the gold-medal contest.

“The guys are ecstatic celebrating their accomplishment,” said McNally. “They’ve worked very hard from through training right up until selection, and certainly through to this moment.

“They are certainly being rewarded for their efforts and are very proud.”

Evan Costain of Kinkora and Nathan Irwin of Summerside each scored two goals to lead the Warriors. Jeremy Wall of Kensington, Derek MacDonald of Bonshaw and Eric Coughlin of Charlottetown chipped in with single tallies.

“It was an excellent team effort,” noted McNally. “They shared the puck very well.”

Keegan Waite of Summerside and Michael MacIsaac of Charlottetown split the goaltending duties.

 

Third gold

Amie Sullivan of Montague won her third gold medal of the National Games in the one-kilometre cross-country race. Sullivan previously won the 100- and 500-metre races.

Janet Charchuk of Alberton added to her collection of two gold medals won on Friday with a bronze in the 100-metre snowshoeing final.

Also in cross-country, Ellen MacNearney of Montague won a silver medal in the 1 1/2 –kilometre event and finished fourth in 2 ½ kilometres. John Rafuse, also of Montague, picked up silver in the 800 metres and had a fourth-place showing in the 100 metres.

Michael Morris of Stratford won a gold medal in the one-kilometre event while Tommy Ling of Charlottetown earned a silver in the 2 ½-kilometre race.
