Ryan McKenna led the Island Gymnastics Academy's senior gymnasts to a bronze medal finish recently at the BlackJack Invitational Meet in Las Vegas, Nev.
McKenna competed in the all-around (tie) in Level 9 15-plus, finishing second on floor, rings and parallel bars, third on high bar, sixth on pommels and seventh on vault.
Teammates Isaac Bourque and Ian McKenna competed in the Level 8 division. Ian McKenna placed seventh all-around, tied for third on floor, placed fourth on pommels, tied for fifth on vault, was sixth on parallel bars, seventh on rings and eighth on high bar. Bourque finished 10th all-around, tied for third on vault, came seventh on rings, eighth on floor, ninth on parallel bars and10th on high bar.
Running since 1995, this meet has grown into one of the largest gymnastics meets in North America, showcasing the best male gymnasts in the United States qualifying to the Olympic trials series. Academy gymnasts had the opportunity to watch the top American gymnasts as they prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
"The Academy has always valued travelling to participate in big international meets. For our national level athletes, it is an important part of their preparation for Canadian championships and Canada Games to get out there and experience high level competition," says Academy coach C.J. Keliher.
