UPEI Panthers

The UPEI Panthers men’s basketball team is looking to take care of business tonight and Saturday against the St. FX X-Men.

Game times are 8 p.m. tonight and 4 p.m. Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

The Panthers (10-4) are two points back of first-place Dalhousie with six games remaining. They are at least four points up on UNB, Acadia and Cape Breton.

“If we keep winning, we’re at least keeping the other three at bay,” Panthers head coach Tim Kendrick said.

That’s important because the top-two teams in the Atlantic University Sport conference get a first-round bye in the playoffs. For Kendrick being the first seed isn’t as important as getting a bye.

“By the time you get to the semifinal whoever you play is going to be very good,” he said.

St. FX meanwhile is in the basement with a 1-12 record and two points.

“We’ve put in ourselves in a pretty good position,” Kendrick said. “We don't have to start looking around for somebody to help us.”

The Panthers remained banged up with Stefan Vujisic and Jon Hovingh out this weekend. Milorad Sedlarevic didn't practice the first three days this week while other guys are battling a variety of ailments.

With the forwards out of the lineup, Kendrick said, these will be key games for Brad States, Dut Dut and Tevin Sutton-Stephenson.

“We need them to play well and stay out of foul trouble,” he said.

Rookie forward Hugh McLarty has been cleared to play.
