NEW WATERFORD, N.S. – The Three Oaks Axemen made it two straight wins at the Coal Bowl Classic on Thursday morning.

Tanton was named the Axemen’s player of the game in Friday’s 67-59 win over Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School at the Coal Bowl Classic in New Waterford, N.S.

The Axemen, who trailed 24-21 at halftime, defeated Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School 67-57 to improve to 2-1 (won-lost) in round-robin play.

Chris Richard poured in 16 points to lead the Axemen while player-of-the-game Matt Tanton and Cameron Paynter each contributed 12.

The Axemen opened the prestigious senior AAA boys’ basketball tournament with a 77-70 loss to Glace Bay on Monday, and then bounced back to outlast St. Mark Catholic High School 58-49 on Wednesday.

Three Oaks will play its final round-robin game against D’Arcy McGee High School on Friday at 9 a.m.

The semifinal games go Friday night, with the consolation and championship games Saturday.
