Sport P.E.I. recognizing 2015's best tonight

Sport P.E.I. is primed and ready to host what will be its 42nd annual amateur sport awards banquet this evening, at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel.

The federation has been working hard the past few weeks on the event, which will celebrate and showcase the achievements of the Island's top senior, junior and college athletes of 2015. 

Finalists for the Bell Aliant senior male athlete award are Carsen Campbell of biathlon, softball's Jeff Ellsworth and Brett Gallant, who as part of the Brad Gushue curling rink has enjoyed an outstanding 12 months.

On the female side, the winner will be chosen from Caitlin Campbell, also of biathlon, hockey's Shannon MacAulay and Special Olympic bowler Jenna Smith, who won three gold medals in Los Angeles at the World Games. 

Some of the award winners have been announced in advance, including ADL administrator of the year Mike James (ringette), PEI Mutual official of the year Kent Walker (baseball), coach of the year Judy Hale (biathlon), masters athlete Tom Nicholls (powerlifting), and the SCORE! team of the year, the Charlottetown Gaudet's Auto Body Islanders (baseball).

In addition to the awards already announced, Sport P.E.I. will present the Premier's award to the sports organization of the year, the President's award for contribution to sport during many years, the Lieutenant Governor's award to the top overall athlete, and new this year, the inspiration award, recognizing an individual who is considered to be inspirational to others in their chosen sport.
